Make A Change Monday: Be the Kind of Person That Takes Action #SOPASTRIKE

Read more about Make A Change Monday here.

Today is January 16, 2012. It’s a Monday just like every other Monday. However, it’s also a day that has been set aside to honor a great and honorable man. Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. would be 83 this year if he had not been assassinated back in April of 1968.

Rev. Martin Luther King Jr stood for something. He was a man of great words and great action. Someone that we can all aspire to be just a bit more like.

It’s easy to sit back and let the winds of change stir around us no matter which way they might blow.

It’s hard to take action to influence those changes and to stand up for what we believe in. Especially if our belief might put us into the minority or at the center of controversy.

However, just read these powerful words:

“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?'” source

Let his words convict you and inspire you to look at the bigger picture things in life.

When you see injustice, do you stand up and say something about it?

Are you the kind of person that takes action?

Make A Change Monday is usually about a small but significant change that you can make that will improve your financial health.

This week, however, I want you to challenge yourself on a larger scale.

What can you do that will make a difference in this world?

Where can you take action that will cause a ripple effect of movement that could potentially bring about great change?

It could be as simple as writing a letter to your congressman or woman. It could be participating in a food or clothing drive in a run down part of your city.

Strike Against SOPA

On Wednesday, January 18th I plan to do my part. It’s not huge (certainly not in the realm of what MLK Jr accomplished!), but I will be “going on strike” and Family Friendly Frugality will be SHUT DOWN for 12 hours.

I am doing this in opposition to the following bills before congress right now: SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act).

On Jan 24th*, Congress will vote to pass internet censorship in the Senate, even though the vast majority of Americans are opposed. We need to kill the bill – PIPA in the Senate and SOPA in the House – to protect our rights to free speech, privacy, and prosperity. We need internet companies to follow Reddit’s lead and stand up for the web, as we internet users are doing every day.

SOPA, if passed, could drastically change the internet as we know it forever. As both a website owner and an internet user, I feel compelled to take action and do my part to stand up against this threat.

You might notice, if you are online on January 18th, that many of your favorite sites will either be dark, or display a message urging readers to learn more about SOPA and to take action against this harmful piece of legislation. It’s basically the internet’s form of standing up for itself and I urge you to do your part.

Sites like Etsy, YouTube, Tumblr, Pinterest, Family Friendly Frugality, etc. could be shut down if this bill passes.

If you want to learn more about SOPA and how you can take a stand, click here to watch this informative video and to send off an email to your congress person.

Here are some more things  you can do:

*I’ve been reading the vote might actually be delayed (for SOPA, no word on PIPA). Not sure for how long, but it will eventually be voted upon. Whether it’s in it’s current form (which the White House has come out publicly in opposition of) or not, it’s important we take a stand!
