|Monetizing Your Blog|
My post about Monetizing My Blog sparked a lot of interest from bloggers and non-bloggers alike. Since so many are interested…I decided that I would start a series of posts titled “Monetizing Your Blog”.
This series will serve as a helpful jump start for anyone wanting to begin monetizing their blog, or just to get some new ideas.
I have a new blog in the works right now, based on this subject alone. It is so severely in its’ infancy right now that I’m embarrassed to show it, but I promise when I reveal it..you’ll be the first to know!
I first heard about VigLink while poking around #savvyblogging on Twitter. I can’t remember which blogger mentioned it, but I know it was some one who I respected enough to immediately go check it out. (If you haven’t followed #savvyblogging on Twitter, I highly encourage you to do so! The best of the best!)
I checked it out, but I have to admit I was really confused about how it worked. The FAQ section is very thorough, but I had to see it in action to trust it.
Here’s the explanation of the program directly from VigLink:
What is VigLink?
What’s the difference between a link and an affiliate link?
Can’t I just create an affiliate link myself?
How does VigLink make money?
Now, obviously…this puts another middle man in between you and the retailer. Which means less commission.
Less commission isn’t ideal…but how many links do you have on your blog right now that you are earning NO commission from?
Think about how many different things you link to on a regular basis: products, services, stores that you are not affiliated with. Imagine if those links all of a sudden made you a bit of cash with no extra effort on your behalf. Every day I post great deals that I don’t see a dime from. I do it because it matters to me that I bring the best of the best to my readers. My primary focus is not to MAKE money but to help others save money. I don’t want to make money blogging…I want to make money from my blog. (the difference matters! It’s what keeps me from posting half the junk that ends up in my inbox).
VigLink will NOT override your current affiliate links. I’ve been with them for over a month now and they’ve never affiliated a link of a retailer that I share a relationship with. Instead, they have enabled me to earn commissions from retailers I have not yet been approved for, the (very) few I’ve been declined for..and the ones that I wasn’t even aware had an affiliate program (or was just too lazy to search for).
Also important…you have to physically link to the site for VigLink to know you want it affiliated.
I can’t just say “The Children’s Place is having an awesome sale today” instead I have to link it “The Children’s Place is having an awesome sale today.”. Now VigLink knows to affiliate the link. I don’t have a prior relationship with The Children’s Place…so when someone clicks the link they automatically register and track it. That is probably common sense to most of you, but I had a heck of a time figuring that out myself for some reason!
Sign up for VigLink today! They do have a referral program, so if you want to sign up under my referral link...I’d appreciate it! As always if you have any questions you can email me at heather @ familyfriendlyfrugality.com or just use the contact form up top.
