Tot Tuesday: Garden with Your Kiddos (Dollar Store Fun)

garden with your kiddos
So excited to get started!

Tot Tuesday is a weekly feature where I highlight a special kids activity, frugal recipe for kids, kids tutorial, etc.

There is nothing quite like teaching your children about nature. Seeing the wonder and awe on their faces when they see the ocean or they watch a butterfly. It’s beautiful to watch the world anew through the eyes of a child.

That’s why I decided that this was the year that I was going to garden with my children.

Digging in the dirt

They are 4 and 2 years old and I think it’s time for them to dig their hands in some dirt and to revel in what comes up!

Gardening can get expensive though. If you are planting a garden with the intention of eating from it, there are a lot of rules to follow and it’s a bit more involved then I wanted to go into with my children right now. Plus, we’re still pretty early in our growing season here in Texas, so it will be a bit until there is much going on in our vegetable/herb/fruit garden.

So we headed over to the local Dollar Tree and we purchased some gardening supplies:

  • 2 small containers
  • 2 packets of seeds
  • 1 bag of dirt
  • 2 small shovels
Daddy helping Lizzie (btw, they DROWNED this plant. It's growing though!)

We headed home and planted our seeds. It took a few days, but eventually one of them started to sprout! The kids were amazed that their hard work had resulted in growth!

Lizzie's Sunflowers
Noah's flowers (not sure what kind he picked out)

As of now, we don’t have any actual flowers, but the kids are still very excited to see the green! They rush to the door every morning wanting to see how much bigger their plants have gotten!

For less than $10, we have a project that teaches them about nature, patience and even a bit of science!

Garden with your kids! It doesn’t have to be expensive, and it’s one of those projects that can keep giving and growing as your children grow up.
