It never fails. Your daughter has no less than 10 party dresses in her closet and try as you might, you can’t find ONE decent pair of slacks that currently fit your son.
Where do you find boys dress clothes?
Truthfully, at any given time during the year, you’ll find dresses everywhere. Boys Dress Clothes seem to only be on display when a holiday is approaching.
Don’t fear though, with these tips you’ll always have a closet with boys dress clothes in the appropriate sizes!
Stores that carry boys dress clothes year round
There are several stores that carry boys dress clothes year round. Here are a few:
- Sears
- JCPenney
- Kohl’s
- Macy’s
- Specialty suit stores (for those times that only a suit will suffice)
If you are a pinch, hit up one of those department stores and you are guaranteed to find some boys dress clothes. The pickings might be slim, but you’ll at least have some choices.
Always be on the lookout for boys dress clothes
Don’t wait until you need them. Every time you go shopping for the next size up, look for slacks, dress shirts and vests for your boy in his new size.
It’s easy to wait until they need them, but you’ll be doing yourself a favor if you always have your eye out. You never know when you’ll get invited to an impromptu nice dinner or he’ll win an award and need to dress up for an award ceremony.
Find boys dress clothes at thrift stores and consignment shops
I’m a frugal gal, so I love to take a trip to my local consignment shop or thrift store to peruse the racks on occasion. The older my boy gets, the less casual wear I find for him in those stores though. (My theory is that boys just wear their clothes OUT and therefore most doesn’t survive to be resold or donated!)
Boys dress clothes are infrequently worn however and you’ll probably have more luck finding nice slacks and blazers at a secondhand shop than a nice pair or jeans!
Don’t wait until the last minute, look for secondhand boys dress clothes and if you must find something for your son to wear last minute, try the department stores I’ve listed above!
If all else fails, call a family member or friend and ask if you can borrow! Our boys have to dress up so infrequently, it’s not worth it to pay a ton on an outfit that might only get one or two uses before they grow out of it.

I get most of our dress boys clothes from French Toast…white button ups, yellow or light blue oxfords, khaki and navy dress pants. All reasonable prices and they last well if you take care of them. We get them actual suits for church from jcpenny, and use French Toast dress shirts. (And for extra frugal, we shop at both stores through swagbucks to collect points!)
